Frequently asked questions
Squish is a free GIF compressor that runs entirely in your browser. Drop in a GIF, pick the size you want, and it shrinks the file while keeping the animation smooth. Your file never leaves your device.
Is Squish really free?
Yes, completely. There is no sign up, no watermark, and no limit on how many GIFs you compress.
Does my GIF get uploaded anywhere?
No. Squish does all the work right inside your browser, so your file never leaves your device and nothing is sent to a server.
How big a GIF can I compress?
You can compress any GIF up to 100 MB.
Will it ruin the animation?
No. Squish keeps your GIF moving. It only trims frames as a last resort and it will never flatten an animated GIF into a single still image.
Can I compress to a specific file size?
Yes. Type the size you want in megabytes and Squish keeps compressing until your GIF fits under it.
Can I make the GIF smaller in dimensions too?
Yes. Lower the width and the height follows along, which shrinks the file even more while keeping the same proportions.
How does Squish actually compress GIFs?
It uses gifsicle compiled to WebAssembly, layering lossless optimization, lossy compression, color reduction, and resizing until your GIF hits the target size.
Which browsers does it work in?
Any modern browser works, including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge.
Who made this?
Squish was built by Ileana Marcut, founder of Creative Glue Lab and UX+AI.
